The last piece of the puzzle........

It's finally here, and all I have to do now is wire up the rigging. That's right friends...a vintage Pioneer PL-115D semi-auto 33/45rpm turntable. All that's left to do is plug this lil beauty into the Kenwood receiver, tap the ground wire, and start recording to the PC.

To be honest, this is a long standing project. I've started it more than once, but always ran into snags, or other projects that popped up and seemed to take priority. I personally have a fair pile of LP's that made this a pet project of mine, but this time it's different. This time no shortcuts or half assed rigging with "iffy preamps". No dodgy "home built cables". No friends......I made a promise this one, and I aims to keep it.

In the past, one of the biggest issues was proper software. Eight years ago, it was easy enough to find a "line in" recorder for the PC like Soundforge, or Audio Galaxy, but the manual editing of every track, and no direct burning support for the then scarce 2-4x cd/r drives available.....well it was a huge pain. Another problem was my nascent tendency to try to do it "on the cheap" with a beat up old preamp held together with more new solder than old....and a fair amount of duct tape.

This time...it's a different game. Kenwood KR-A4010 / Pioneer PL-115D / Heavy Duty patch cables to the PC / and a new generation of software. I think I'm going to start with an app called "Spinitagain", but there is always "Audacity" and Adobe makes an authoring program for this as well......we'll tinker..:)

Why go to all the trouble you may ask? Yeah...I know, most of my LP's are available as cd's now. I may be of the opinion that "Vinyl just sounds better" too, but that's not it. When Agrah's (Mrs Zig) dad passed last fall, we inherited his LP collection. This is my promise to her. Of the 300 or so, most have childhood and or teen memories for her. Artists from Derringer to the Moody Blues...Scorpions to Cat Stevens. Basically alot of good dope smoking music in this pile!! :)

My promise to rip these to CD, and then to MP3.......for her collection, so this music can live again. Wish me luck!!!!! :)

***Editors note......Vintage does not mean my dad is an old fart., we've decided vintage=kick ass!! :)

I have to tell you . . . it's a little disconcerting to see the turntable I spent so much time and effort choosing and purchasing a mere 31 years ago to be referred to as "vintage". Just what are you trying to say here, Sonny?

    Blogger ZigZagMan said ... (10:10 AM) :

Dad.....hows about we compromise and replace the word..."vintage" with the phrase.."kick ass"?? :)

Works for the fine turn table......works for porn...we all good then? :)

The amendment and appropriate groveling has been accepted. You're back in the will.
